The medical examination of seafarers is a medical check-up conducted before their embarkation on a vessel. The purpose of the medical examination is to determine the health status and fitness of the seafarer for work at sea.
The basic requirements for seafarers to be permitted to work at sea include:
- Visual and auditory acuity;
- Epidemiological safety;
- Adequate mental health;
- Spatial orientation;
- Good musculoskeletal function;
- Absence of any illness that may worsen or pose a danger to others;
- Absence of alcohol or drug dependence;
For people performing functions related to ship safety, additional factors are examined: sensorimotor reactions, reaction to moving objects, attention and switching speed, visual and auditory memory, emotional stability, fatigue resistance, monotony tolerance, spatial orientation, decision-making speed.

What do you need to present for a medical examination?
To perform a medical check-up, you need to present the following documents:
- Any proof of your identity (seafarer's book, international passport);
- Vaccination record;
- Results of the previous medical examination (if available);
Important! If your work is related to the kitchen (cook, bartender, waiter), a salmonella test is required. You can take this test with us or bring a ready-made result. This will speed up the preparation of the documents, because the result for the salmonella test is ready within 24 hours.
When preparing for a medical examination, please note that:
You should not eat for at least 8 hours before blood collection. Avoid fatty foods, concentrated sweets, and alcohol the day before. Postpone analyses after paraclinical investigations and physiotherapeutic procedures.
For urine collection:
Pick up the urine container from our clinic, Harper Medklinik, or from a pharmacy. Maintain rigorous hygiene before collection. Collect all urine in the morning, after waking up, and bring it to the clinic within 2 hours.
For stool samples:
48-72 hours before, adopt a high-fiber diet and avoid red meat, turnip, horseradish, fish, and green vegetables. Do not take laxatives, steroids, or other mentioned medications. Use the stool collection containers provided by our clinic or purchased from pharmacies.
